[Guide] How to install artificial grass step-by-step

Forget about mowing the lawn; learn how to install artificial grass in your garden or on your terrace, whether over soil or hard surfaces.

Maintenance is minimal and requires no special care—simply watering and brushing. It can be installed on almost any surface, and insects are not attracted to it, as it contains no living matter.

Materials you will need to install artificial grass:

  • Artificial grass.
  • Safety gloves.
  • Artificial grass joining tape and adhesive, or self-adhesive joining tape.
  • Tape measure or ruler.
  • In the case of installation on the ground:
  • Sand
  • Weed control fabric.
  • Nails or staples.
  • Silica sand and/or infill grass.
  • Brush for artificial grass.

To choose the right turf, several fundamental aspects must be taken into account:

  • The dimensions of the space.
  • The intended use of the lawn—whether decorative or functional.
  • Stitches per square meter. The higher the number of stitches per square meter, the denser your lawn will be.
  • Base composition. The base is in contact with the ground; depending on whether it is thicker or thinner, it will provide greater stability.
  • Fiber types. Depending on the artificial grass model and its intended use, the fiber must possess specific properties.
  • Drainage points. Small perforations in the base of the turf allow water to drain away easily; the more of these there are, the greater the drainage capacity.

Preliminary steps

  1. Clean and clear the surface.
  2. Condition of the ground. The surface should have a slight slope towards a drain to prevent water from pooling. Check this by watering the area to see if puddles form.
  3. Prepare the floor to ensure it is free of imperfections, smooth, and will not cause wrinkles.

*To install artificial grass over soil, the surface must be covered with enough sand or gravel to even out the ground. You need to achieve a flat, level surface to ensure an optimal final appearance and prevent hollow spots from forming beneath the artificial grass. If there are uneven areas, the solution is to fill them with sand; approximately 4–5 kg per square meter will be required. Additionally, a weed-control membrane should be installed.

STEP 1 Measure the surface.

It is essential to measure and calculate the required amount of material, bearing in mind that artificial grass is stored and distributed in 2- or 4-meter-wide rolls.

STEP 2 Prepare the artificial grass

Lay the turf on the ground, orienting all the fibers in the same direction for a uniform look, and leave a 5 cm margin along all edges to allow for trimming.

It is important to clean up the edges by using a utility knife to cut a straight line along both sides, ensuring a smooth, imperfection-free finish.

Let the turf settle for 2 or 3 hours before trimming it; this will help prevent any wrinkles.

Turn the artificial grass over and use a utility knife to mark the cutting areas along the seam lines. This way, you will avoid cutting the stitches.

STEP 3 Install artificial grass

*To install artificial grass over tiles, concrete, or cement, use double-sided joining tape or adhesive joining strips. Glue is not strictly necessary, though it may be beneficial for larger terraces, serving as a supplementary measure for the center area. For installation on soil, a combination of joining strips and glue is recommended.

Trim the excess turf left earlier to fit your space perfectly, and fold back the edges of the strips to expose the seam lines. Lay down the joining tape and apply the adhesive over it, being careful not to use too much. Press along the seam to ensure the adhesive bonds securely and the join is invisible. Make sure the two pieces are firmly joined together.

Place heavy objects on the joints. Wait 24 hours.

STEP 4 Filling and finishing.

Applying the infill is beneficial because it helps prevent wrinkles, protects the grass fibers, and keeps them upright. Next, sprinkle the organic infill and brush the grass against the grain to lift the fibers.
